View Full Version : Your Internet Connection Speed?
What kinda connection are you on most of the time when surfing the web, whether it\'d be from home, work, net cafe, where ever!
Me: most of the surfing done from work (T whatever), hardly surf at all from home but at home is cable/broadband
EDIT: I ain\'t a computer geek so don\'t knock me for the lack of choices! :D

I voted for above cable/dsl... I have hispeed extreme at home (5.0 Mbps) so it\'s a little above your average cable/dsl connection. Really happy with it.

Did you really notice a difference with the Extreme? I\'ve been toying with the idea of upgrading from my regular high speed modem, but I\'ve heard conflicting stories on the performance gains.

Very big difference...
What I did before i called Rogers was to test my internet connection on Toast.net (http://performance.toast.net/) \"using the toast.net 1 server\" and took a screen shot. Then I called rogers, had them upgrade me (it\'s done administrativly). I cleared my internet cache/temp files then ran the test again. Took another screen shot and compared...
there was a huge difference and when it comes to general browsing i also notice a difference.
Try it out.. as far as i remember there are no contracts, so you can always revert back to what you had. A lot of it also depens on the area you live. New areas in Richmond Hill are normally fed with Fibre up until the stret, then you get RG6 from that point to the house.

I could have sworn that you need a different high speed modem for the high speed extreme? I know there\'s no charge for the service, you just have to buy the modem ($100).

my apologies... you\'re right, you need a DOCSIS modem, but you can now rent it instead of purchasing it. If you don\'t have a Docsis modem, It will cost you $3 extra per month for the modem, then an extra $2 for the Extreme service.. so and additional 5 dollars a month for extreme. (Source: rogers website). I would still recommend you ask them if you can revert back to what you had if you feel it\'s not worth it... just incase!

Sympatico high-speed.
Its nice, goes down once or twice a year. Although, when it does go down its like for 1-2 days but its reliable.
Unlimited bandwidth unlike rogers (dunno bout extreme). I know of many ppl where rogers warned them about their bandwidth usage. I went to 80gigs total (up and down), and bell didnt say anything.
My avg DL speed is 120-150KB/s not that high but its fast enough for me. The ping when playing games is pretty decent. Less than 100ms, when I play 1st person shooters (connecting to the netplay server when I used to play cs). and 350ms to the conqueronline server (A mmorpg).
I\'d pick that over rogers, lousy customer service/support from what I hear

I have been really happy with Sympatico, I am on the high speed package and they have upped my ul/dl speeds twice in the past 3 years. At the moment I\'m running around 2400 down and 640 up.

I have Rogers Extreme edition aswell. 5mbps a sec is around 640kbsec download and I do about 90 kbsec upload. Its good for me as I host websites and download allot of \"free\" software and ftp. But I think for an average internet serfer the hispeed or even light from rogers is enough. Most website downt even provide close to 500kbsec upload for people surfing there pages anyhow. Most of the time you only doing 200-300. But major sites like Microsoft, ATI, Quick time movie trailers.. oh that goes up to 650kbsec :p
