View Full Version : New brake noise when backing up

Remember during the winter months, everybody was complaining about brake squeaking when backing up?
Now I\'ve a new problem. When I back my car up, my rear brakes produce a loud and deep grinding noise. It\'s not a high pitch squeel like when the brakes are cold, but a loud and deep noise. It\'s very embarrassing when you do parallel parking in downtown, or even just to back into/out from a parking spot in a mall.
I just got my 24K service (with brake inspection) done couple weeks ago. They didn\'t tell me if there\'s anything wrong with my brakes.
Anyone here is experiencing the same problem?

The brakes also makes this noise for me when stopping at a low speed. like moving foward in a tim hortons line. You can hear them crunching. Its so embarrasing to have a brand new car wiht loud squeaky brakes :(

I have the same problem when backing up, I have only 1,800km and this started a few weeks back. It appeared to happen only when the weather was damp{rain} Doesn\'t seem to happen when in forward. It happened today with no rain or damp conditions.

Hey Guys check the under Topic 17\" rubbing, there\'s a link in there to TSBs on this problem I believe.:)

That TSB is only related to suspension issues if you are driving over speed bumps or pot holes. :)

I think he\'s referring to the link majic posted in that thread, right here. (http://www.finishlineperformance.com/mazda3/bulletins_index.html)
I read the \"Squeak Noise From Rear Brakes\" TSB and the description does not fit my problem. My brakes do not squeak when I take off from a stop, or during light braking application.
Not to speak my VIN does not fall under the applicable VINs...
I have the same problem as well.... It\'s happened a few times to me when I\'m backing into a spot.... I\'m thinking it\'s probably because of the rain or moisture or a combination of both since it was raining each time that it happened.... so i\'m guessing there\'s not too much we can do about it...
Newlook, does it happy every time? or only after a wet or humid day? Might be the moisture rusting up the rotors and when you gently apply the brakes, the brake pads are rubbing against/off the rusted areas causing the low grinding noise.

I figured it would happen in the damp/wet conditions. It was the long weekend and it was kinda humid. I had no problems for these couple days.
Moisture rusting.... no. Cuz in all occassions I\'ve driven my car for a period of time, then it happened when I was there at the parking spot and needed to back up.
The noise is the grinding/brake slipping noise if the rotors are wet. If you\'ve driven your car through a car wash then apply brakes, you\'ll hear the same/similar sound - just this is unexpected and much louder.

david3, I was talking about the link Newlook was nice enough to place here, which I think the Mods should make sticky for everyones info.
Newlook, I realize none of the TSBs listed have your exact symptoms but considering all of the problems Mazda is having with the brakes I think it would be a good idea before your warranty runs out, to get it in have them service the rears and check all four corners...if the problem is not then solved demand all new brakes and make sure they follow the TSBs (theres several on brakes) instructions on the installation of so mentioned parts.
Keep us posted,:)

Ok so I took the car in today.
Long story short... they couldn\'t locate the problem at first. I went test drive with the shop foreman and of course I knew how to make the noise. So he said they have to check the rotors. They machined my rear rotors and now they\'re ok... not sure if they\'ll stay problemless tho.
I wonder if this problem is linked with the grooving problem and the winter squeeking noise when backing up.

hmm,
this is kind of weird, im having hte same problem, when backiung up and breaking it makes that exact noise. also today and yesterday i noticed that when im driving regularily at like speed sof 60 and im turning it sounds like there is some kind of friction or contact between something on the front passenger wheel somewhere.
grr i brang my car in a long time ago to fix the problem with my steering wheel shaking when breaking, grooving problem?, and now i have that exact problem again -________________-
i have no time to take my car in this week GRRHKJAG:DA

I\'d start to get a bit upset with them if I were you.....request to have new rotors put on. If they\'ve already machined these ones once, I wouldn\'t want them doing it again. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree, when rotors are machined (may solve the problem) the life of the rotors have been shorten. They are now thinner and will heat up quickly and begin to warp again and at this point need to be replaced, at your cost?. When we buy a new car we want new parts not parts that have been altered.

Another update:
My car is sitting at the dealer now. My last fix was exactly 2 weeks ago and they machined my rear rotors.
Now they\'re saying my left rear caliper has to be replaced. It sticks because I painted it, and that\'s what causing the noise. They\'ll also machine my rotors (again) when they put the new caliper on.
I told them they\'ve been machined two weeks ago and this will shorten the life of the rotors. They said they\'re going to take off just a tiny bit this time, and wouldn\'t be affecting too much.
I questioned:
1. My calipers were painted LAST YEAR. If they stick, should the problem exist last year?
2. It was completely fine for a week after they machined the rotors 2 weeks ago. Problem reappeared one week later. They don\'t seem to be able to answer why...
I\'m kinda pissed. I\'ve a feeling that the same problem will come back a week or two later.

I do not believe machining your rotors will solve the problem. Morningside Mazda had machined my rotors when I first got my car after I had complained about the grooving. After it was machined, there was a ticking sound from the rear rotors.......turns-out the rotors were not machined evenly and were thus uneven hence the ticking noise. I told them no more machining, I want new rotors, which they replaced, and no ticking noises since.
These jokers will look for any excuse to hide their ignorance. That’s why I won’t be making any changes or modifications to my 3.
Felix, I would suggest you take your car to Airport Mazda.

Which one is Airport Mazda? Ontario Mazda?
I think it\'s the pads.... not the rotors and not the calipers. Of course they told me after replacing the caliper, the problem will be corrected... let\'s wait and see.
EDIT: And oh, I requested new rotors cuz they machine them twice within 2 weeks. The service advisor told me \"it might not be necessary\"..... I hate dealing with dealerships.

Here is the info for Airport Mazda:
Airport Mazda of Toronto
415 Rexdale Blvd.
Rexdale, Ontario
M9W 6P8
Phone : (416) 745-0001
Fax : (416) 745-9596
I don\'t believe they are affiliated with Ontario Mazda but then you never know who really owns which dealership.

Well good for you!! I didn\'t want to say it but I thought it was probably the caliper causing the problem, as stated in one of the TSBs.Mazda has seemed to have messed up on 3 brakes in a couple of ways, but hopefully the problem is solved. This should be a lesson for all of us,...Mazda dealers know of these problems but will try to get off by \'turning\' the problem away.If I have any problems with my 3, I\'ll demand new parts right up!I\'ll probably print out the TSBs to show them so they have no argument.
Well good to hear your all fixed up and thanks for the update.

I would of asked them why they didn\'t replace both, and Newlook I think its very unlikely it had anything to do with you painting the calipers.Go read the TSBs there\'s one where they\'ve actually changed the design of the caliper to solve the noise problem. Its just more Dealer Bullshit.

they didnt have the caliper, just the pads, AFAIK!
EDIT: I mean new ones, that is.
My car also has a similar problem when backing up. I went to the dealership near Young & Steeles yesterday but they couldn\'t reproduce the problem. In my case, the problem occurs after the car has warmed up, and if I turn the steeling wheel in reverse.

Fuman thanks for your input, do you have the TSB number? or where can I find it on the net. I had the same problem in the late spring when the weather was wet, damp, raining. Seems ok now but will it return later and if the dealer can\'t reproduce the problem so the TSB would be helpful.

Did a search and found the following, no mention of a brake fix for the 05\'s, but maybe the list has not been up dated as yet, I am sure some here might know of this info, more for any new comers.
