Turning A Corner
They generally involve a red light, a long wait, a haphazard configuration or drivers without a lot of patience.
They’re the worst intersections in the city for accidents. Toronto last released their list using numbers from 1999-2001.
Since then, there have been red light cameras, added police vigilance and new warnings for motorists. But the number of serious collisions continues to be a major concern for authorities and those who watch traffic patterns in the G.T.A.
(A “serious collision†means a person was killed or badly injured. It doesn’t include only property damage.)
There are an average of 68,000 crashes every year in Toronto, with nearly 17,000 involving a personal injury to either a pedestrian, a driver, a cyclist, or an innocent bystander. The average fatality rate as of 2004 stood at 66, a number cops have worked hard to reduce.
Here’s where city stats indicate the highest risks were for those turning a corner on traffic in Toronto.
1) Black Creek & Lawrence W.
2) Eglinton & Warden
3) Kennedy & Sheppard E.
4) Lawrence & Warden
5) Ellesmere & Warden
6) Lawrence E. & McCowan
7) Finch W. & Jane
8) Lawrence E. & Victoria Park
9) Dufferin & Finch
10) Markham & Progress
The city’s Steve Johnston tells Pulse24.com that’s the last list authorities plan to issue. Experts believe it focuses too much attention on specific areas, and makes drivers lax at other intersections that are equally dangerous.
So to update the list, we’re turning to you. What do you believe is the worst intersection in the city? What have your experiences been at those corners? Are you more cautious there than elsewhere? Or do you avoid them altogether and go a different way? Email us at news@pulse24.com, and we’ll share your experiences.
