I kept getting notice that our 3 only needs to get an oil change @ every 8000 kms, is that true??? it seems too abnormal to my knowledges.....coz as to my knowledge, any regular motor oil can only last u max. 5K~6K, how can our car handle a 8K oil change w/those motor oil??? even my dad can\'t believe what the manual said (he\'s an auto mechanic)

mazda supposedly uses semi-synth.. hence a bit longer lasting.. it seems like more and more manufacturers go to 8K intervals - same thing with our accord.

Also I am having hard time finding oils for the car (coz I never go to dealer for services), since it uses only 5W20, I rarely find different brands have that spec, only VALVOLINE and QUAKER STATE......and it seems to me they don\'t have different specs for those 5W20s.....like Semi-Syn, or fully Syn.....no choices!? :sarc

if you want to go synthetic, give mobil1 0W20 a shot. many people on mazda6tech (2.3L as well as the V6 version) have had great results with the oil.. a few of us on the board run with that oil..

EDIT: soon it will get replaced by 5W20 so that players like Honda and Mazda are happy b/w 0W20 is not to their spec :sarc

what does that 5 and 20 means in motor oils? versus 0, 10 or something?

Does our car have an O-ring around the filter?
or is it just a filter?

yes.. and when you buy it from mazda (if you want to do own oil changes) it comes with the O-ring (2 actually - small ~1cm diameter, large~5cm diameter) and member special price is $10.12 (I THINK) after taxes

Just thought I\'d throw this in,...met a guy yesterday with the new Cobalt SS 205 Hp Supercharged. The car comes with Mobil 1 oil (Can\'t remember the grade....alzhiemers maybe) and GM stresses to use nothing else.
The oil change interval is every 12000km......

THANKS! I\'m planning on doing earlier oilchanges during the break-in period as my mechanic recommended it. metal shavings comes off during break in.
I\'m going to change @200, and 1000. then the regular mazda ones.

Running synthetic oil is quite common on cars that have forced induction.

I could swear that there was a period (few years back) when GM cars came with some sort of 100,000km no tune up req\'d thing for their engines. And I think changing the oil was a part of that...but I can\'t find it anymore. Anyone else hear of the same?

I doubt very highly that GM would release an engine that could go without an oil change for 100,000km......I remember them saying that the car did not require the annual 24K type of service and whatnot, but oil and filter changes are quite necessary at regular intervals.

GM have 100K miles ie 160K km no tune up interval, but oil change still needed, this ad was mention about a year or two ago, but now never see it.

I browsed the Mobil 1 US site, it already changed to 5w20, but not in Canadian site.:sarc

I\'ve been running Mobil1 OW20 since the second oil change and I\'m due for my 40000km change soon...anyone know the cheapest place to buy it in the 4.4l jug?

Prior to this I\'d buy 4-5 smalle bottles at Crappy Tire...none of the stores I\'ve visited stocked 0W20 in the large jugs.
