Need for Speed was on the news today, I borrowed the following news article for 680 news. I play this game, and has no affect on my driving, and don’t see the fact that one of the guys had a copy of the game in his car during the crash, should even be an issue. I’m sorry that someone had to die, and these two street-racers should take full blame, and not to punish the game makers in any way.

Cabbie killed in street race; video game link?
January 25, 2006 - 1:30 pm
By: Anne Winstanley
They are extremely popular among teens and gamers, but could a street racing video game have played a part in a deadly street racing crash in Rosedale Tuesday night?
A cab driver was killed by a speeding car that was allegedly involved in a street race on Mt. Pleasant Rd. south of St. Clair. at around 10:20 p.m.
Toronto Police say two teens may have been imitating a popular street-racing video game. Detective Paul Lobsinger says a copy of the game, Need for Speed, was found on the front seat of one of the teens\' cars.
Police say two 18-year old friends were racing each other in their parents\' Mercedes when one slammed into a taxi making a left turn. The impact crushed the cab against a pole. The driver of the Mercedes suffered only scratches, while the other feld the scene.
Investigators say the dead taxi driver, 46-year old Tahir Khan, was working to bring his wife and two children to Canada from Pakistan.
Both 18 year olds have been charged with criminal negligence causing death, and one with failing stop after an accident causing death.

That wing looks retarded :sarc

On a more serious note regarding the taxi driver who got killed by those idiots street racing, I hope the two of them rot in prison, always the innocent who get hurt/killed :(

Ditto for those morons in the cinema/mall parking lots after a showing of both Fast and Furious movies, eh? :sarc

First - I hope the drivers rot in prison.

Second - I just hate it when the media cite \"video game/movie/music\" was a factor in some crime/incident. Same as idreamofmazda - I\'ve played/play car racing video games and the last thing I think I can do is go racing through the streets of Toronto - however overall it makes better news most likely because when \"video game/movie/music\" is cited as a reason, it\'s the easy reason - it makes sense to most adults (I\'m 31 so I fall into that \'adult\' category - and I think constantly citing like they do is rubish), it avoids larger more complex issues such as proper parenting (like teaching your kid what responsiblity you have when you drive a car), driver training, social issues, etc.

On a humorous note:
Based on the a video game being found on a person I guess some conclusions could be drawn about a person such as:

Star Wars Battle Front (I&II) - you\'re off to fight in the Clone Wars with Yoda at your side kicking Sith butt across the galaxy
Mario Super Cart - you\'re off to race go carts along with a plumber with a huge head, a dinosaur and a princess and eat mushrooms for points
NBA 2005 - you play for the Raptors (oh wait, maybe that\'s true...)

Long time no see, JMak, interesting I had that thinking in my head ... \"you don\'t see teens running around punching ceiling blocks looking for a magical mushroom or a bouncing star.\"

I wouldn\'t mind playing some more Leisure Suit Larry tho; probably still get slapped by the women LOL

I think I saw bubba punching ceiling blocks looking for \"Magic Mushrooms\" :p

*********

I agree with all of you guys, just \'cause he had the game in the car don\'t
mean the game influenced him. And I do hope those two idiots rot in jail.
Is negligence or whatever the worst they could get? isn\'t there a greater charge?
I just hope they go away for a long long time.

Now that was a video game......I still remember the questions you had to answer to actually play the game that would \'prove\' you were of age;)

Some of those answers were easy to guess tho :)

The two kiddies are in court for bail hearings. If they are found guilty, they can get life in prison.

How many 18 year olds can purchase a Mercedes?

While it could be argued that there are exceptions as to how marketing affects some people, this comment cuts through the politically correct crap that is so pervasive in society today. Accepting personal responsibility needs to be taught.

Well put JMAK74.

O\'la,

Cardinal Fang - thank you

wtom - been in a hibernation mode of late

majic - about the ipod - I saw a news article/TV spot that the ipod video is/may be responsible for minors getting access to adult material (i.e. pornography) - wait a minute, you mean the ipod selects and downloads adult material on it\'s own and suddenly little Jimmy is watching Jenna Jameson getting a visit by butt pirates, or wait, could it be possible, just maybe possible, that these minors are not being parented effectively by their parents when it comes to internet access and the difference between materials that are correct for an adult vs. a minor?????? and a round we go....

About liablitity - as it is a criminal accident, insurance will not cover this, which means the owner of the vehcile(s) are liable out of their own pocket for associated costs (clean up by the city, if the family decides to sue, etc), which in this case would be the parents most likely.

I think I\'ve ranted too much already, and will go back to joyous banter of things like Chuck Norris (that link was hilarious) and my Mazda3 (which has a ton, so to speak, of stone chips - argh!!!)

Just my $0.02 in a $1,000,000.00 world.

JK

Saron Ghebressellassie; “Sometimes we get out of hand. We have fun. You know, a lot of us are just getting our new licences now.”

Anyone here know Saron?!?!?!? If Saron is thinking like that, God help us with the younger generations today because they think they should get away with accidental murder while behind the wheel. :sarc

And so much for \"above average graded\" students who get discounts on their insurance premiums, eh?

WTF!!!!! Does going to a rich school and getting good grades have to do with driving their \"family\'s car\", f$%^kin\' around on public roads doing 140 Kph, and crashing into another car killing another person?! I\'m no angel, but getting carried away is messing with your friends and one of you(s) get hurt. Not someone innocent that had nothing to do with their stupidness.

I guess the media would expect this type of behaviour from kids that go to a public school, get average grades, and drive average priced cars.:sarc

BTW I still have to install NFS:MW

it\'s refreshing to see the type of thinking that prevails on this board. i\'m in agreement with everything said so far.

the dumbasses should go to jail for the max term for being so irresponsible.

just had to vent!

I\'d like to buy need for speed but I\'m afraid it will affect how I drive, and with all the media attention laetely I\'m sure it\'s only a matter of time before the insurance companies will raise the rates if they find out you have played Need for speed, or even if you know someone thats played it! lol

Don\'t be surprised if TO\'s greatest start implementing a tracker on every street racing game sold in the GTA just so they can proclaim \"hey we ticketed 10 people doing 140 in a 50 and they had <insert favourite street racing title here> in their possession!\"

Better yet, they can saddle themselves in my neighbour because there are so many dumbasses with cars looking literally pulled out of most rice-inhabited street racing games, farting up and down the streets.

(some of you getting the jist of how much I hate the neighbourhood I live in?)
