View Full Version : Asians Lounge
Whos ur dadd
06-16-2005, 10:02 PM
In light of some disriminatory practices going on here, I\'m going to start an Asians Only Lounge.
To post in this thread, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
1. You\'re an Asian;
2. You want to be an Asian;
3. You want to date an Asian;
4. You know at least one Asian on a first-name basis; or
5. Your post will contain the word Asian.
To kick off this thread, today\'s discussion topic will be: Best bubble tea joint in the GTA.
Tomorrow\'s topic: Training your non-Asian friends how to find parking at Pacific Mall.

1: I\'m not
2: I don\'t
3: Been there, done that...but sure I\'ll go there again!
4: I know several
5: Is mentioning the word itself not disriminating ?
Haven\'t been to bubble tea in many years...but I do remember this one place in R.Hill that had games you could play at the tables...I like that idea.

umm,
lol whos asian here anyways?
anyways lets continue with the thread! i believe the best bubble tea place is, in no particular order:
gofortea, destiny(depends which ones), a place for us.
places like teashop 168 just doesnt do it for me, and when refering to bubble tea place im assuming ur talkinga bout the kind were u can go into the place, sitdown, and \"chill\". however the best bubble tea place for just ordering take out MUST BE first markham place\'s tasy house! haha i love that place, so many cards -___________________-\
btw i HIGHLY RECOMMEND gofortea in commerce valley and a place for us in first markham place. lol then again im somewhat biased because of sentimental value that these particular places have for meeeee :D
EDIT: best \"chow fan\" must be \"ham yu, gi lup, chow fan\" = \"salty fish, chicken piece, friend rice\"
and the \"jui gaow siu\" = \"funniest\" friend rice is ***EN STYLE CHOW FAN! haha many people pronounce it as ****ING XDDDD
\"can i have ONE ****ING RICE?\"

Thanks to Zaku who seems to be the only person taking this thread seriously. And for those who don\'t meet the admission requirements for this Lounge, please stay out: it\'s an elite subgroup we have here, and we want to keep YOUR KIND out of this Lounge.
;)
Today\'s normally-scheduled topic has been replaced. The new discussion topic for today:
Can you tell if a Chinese restaurant is any good by looking at the ethnicity of its clientele? Case in point: Lee Garden in downtown Chinatown has a huge non-Asian clientele. Is it any good, or does it merely serve great sweet and sour chicken balls? Hmmm....

agreed. those are the best places in markham/R.Hill for bubble tea
but ill rank them :p :p
gofortea - seems to be the new \'hangout\' of this summer. nice cars, nice girls, nice atmosphere and good drinks ---> (1)
a place for us - small/cozy feeling, drinks are REALLY good, kinda getting \"run-down\" -----> (2)
destiny - the one @ commerce gate sux, but the one on starwalk is ALOT better. soo many waitresses ahahahah. but drinks are meh (good, but nothing out of the ordinary). AND, WHY CAN I NEVER SIT ON THE SECOND FLOOR ? has any one been up there ? i remember i had a party with over 15 pp and they still didnt open it up for us.
for takeout .. its gotta be congeewong @ fmp
:p :p :p

A place for us is good, games and is cheaper there too.
The best food around RH, would be malyasian place by major mac and bayview. A bit on the expensive side, but big dishes and amazing food. like 10 bucks with tips/tax for a dish.

I had a great time there! We just sat around drinking coffee and drinks, eating and talking about our Mazdas. Mods, where to buy things, what to look for, what to avoid, future plans. A good time was had by all, and I understood most of it too (I can understand 80% of the Tagalog spoken, but conversing and writing is a whole other story). It\'s a good thing we were in the shade to, with the humidex it was around 45c.

There\'s no parking there so I usually end up buying ulam to eat at home. Most of the time I eat at Remely\'s (Sheppard btw McCowan and Markham) or Gold Ribbon (south of Pacific Mall) or the Barrio Fiesta on Sheppard, east of Markham. I will travel for good food. :D

The best Pho place (for the beef noodle of course) IMHO is VIP Restaurant in the First Markham Place plaza. I do NOT trust Pho Hua (train) or Pho88 from all the stories I hear. Green Bamboo is alright but it ranks quite low compared to VIP (Midland and Sheppard).
Korean ... I don\'t like the Korean place at Commerce. BTW it\'s not real Korean food. :p Walker Hill is better IMHO (further west along Hwy 7 from Commerce).
I prefer \"real\" Korean food either in the Yonge/Finch area or downtown in Korea Town, made by Koreans. :D

Best Thai place: \"Real Thailand\" Bloor/Spadina. Ironically run by real Thai people.
Best Korean place: \"Korean BBQ\" I think. On Yonge just north of College (West side just past 7eleven)
Best Viet food: Sorry, only in Montreal. Toronto places all taste the same.
Best Italian: Toni Balloni Cumberland & Avenue (between Four Seasons & the Parking lot) Small place but the best lasagna ever.(Only served on fridays).
Not sure eactly where I gained 50 lbs in the last 5 years :sarc , but I\'m sure they are to blame. That and all the super cheap chinese food:D

I second what WTOM said. Coming from a Korean here, Korean BBQ is NOT, I repeat NOT Korean food. I don\'t know why people get it mixed up. Korean BBQ @ Commerce uses a Korean style way of cooking but in NO WAY is it Korean food. The BBQ at commerce ain\'t that good IMO. If you want a real Korean BBQ, go to a Korean restaurant and have your BBQ there. It comes with all the proper \"side dishes\" aas well. The whole point of the bbq is not to eat as much as possible, but to enjoy the taste of what\'s being cooked. I hate how people say they\'ve had korean food when all they\'ve had is imitation korean food.
BTW, Korea Town is actually on Bloor between Bathurst and Christie. Go to any restaurants there and you\'ll be sure have real korean food. Yonge and Finch is not koreatown, however, since there are sooo many Korean\'s living in the area, it acts as a uptown koreatown. There is a Morning Glory at both yonge & finch and bloor.

06-20-2005, 03:52 AM
What are you talking about! Korean bbq is the best bbq! Maybe it\'s not \"authentic\" korean cuisine but it sure tastes pretty damn good! I just go for the beef! And for the price (I usually do lunch or the night owl) it can\'t be beat. $10 can get you a wrap, subway sandwich... but BBQ? only with those korean grill houses can you satisfy those munchies after a session.
I remember going there almost everyweek during high school because I would have a singing practice and then we\'d all go for korean bbq. Ahh the first piece of beef off the grill tastes sooooo goood. Screw the seafood cause it makes the grill taste \'fishy\' and nobody likes fishy....

AFbunnie answered regarding Korean cuisine. Thx girl, finally posting again here! :D
As for stories... it\'s the same old story that gets spread around about the chefs adding some \"special ingredients\" into the bowls of beef noodles that come out. It probably was true many yrs ago and they\'ve \"cleaned up\" now but you know how it is. Negative comments stick more.

Taiwanese here.
Best Thai restaurant: Jasmine Rice across from Sherway Garden (427 / Gardiner). IMO Spring Roll sucks regardless of the location. If you want some decent Thai food downtown, try Salad King on Gerrard / Yonge across from Ryerson.
Best Viet place: Saigon Star (Bayview / 7) is pretty good, although it is not very authentic... Great seafood.
Now here goes my question: what happened to Lantern nearby Gerrard / Yonge???

Total agreement regarding Spring Roll!!! My first and only time was to the Yonge/Dundas one and WTF it was NOT good. Their Tom Yum soup was SWEET (literally). WTH. I asked the waitress and she went to the kitchen (without the soup) and asked the chef. Supposedly said that\'s how it should be... whatever! I know my Tom Yum soup! It should NOT be sweet.
Salad King is awesome! Loved it when I use to go to Ryerson. Seafood Flied Lice YUMMY!!!
Saigon Star use to be the sh!t but it has lost the touch from a few yrs back when all their dishes were amazing. Especially their popular curry crab dish!
Ah well... $6 for a bowl of Pho at VIP restaurant is my preference any time. :D

Another vote for Salad King near Ryerson. Haven\'t been there in a couple of years, but when I did go, the food was fantastic. And a great price too. Is it still as good as it used to be?
There was a time where Young Thailand was awesome. Great tasting food. Then it went down the crapper. I\'ve only recently started to go back and I must say my last two meals there were pretty good.
And nother vote for the Thai place in the McDonald\'s plaza at Bayview and Major Mac! Someone mentioned this place earlier in this thread.
I\'m getting hungry!!!

Best Japanese-style buffet.
Wasabi (across from PMall) was pretty good.

Has anyone been to Kaji Sushi in the Queensway/Islington area in South Etobicoke??
Not a buffet or AYCE place, but supposedly one of the best sushi places and as
authentic as you can get.
I\'ve always seen it in the top 3 sushi places in Toronto Life magazine for like
the past 4 yrs! Kaji is supposedly the sushi master whom the guys downtown apprenticed
under.
I hear it\'s pricey but worth it! I\'ve always wanted to go there.

Korean buffet (or should I say Canadian interpretation of Korean-style buffet lest I offend some folk ;)):
Seoul Garden in Market Village. They use charcoal! That cancer-causing method of cooking really tastes yummy!
Buffet on the weekend is $15.95 adult.
Question: so Kal Bi and Bul Go Gi are not true Korean dishes? Or is it the fact that everything is thrown on a grill generally that makes it not authentic Korean?

Hello all; new member here.
Well, I seem to meet most of the requirements (except for the dating one... alas woe is me to never have been the company of a loving lady).
Cantonese, BTW.
I am personally quite skeptical about the Asian restaurant market... too many posers out there, particularly in the buffet segment. No Indian person will actually go and eat at their restaurants, and same goes with my Thai friend, and you\'d never find me eating at a Chinese buffet.
I swear Chinese buffets give Caucasian people a really piss poor idea of what real Chinese food is. When asked for a recommendation, I\'d pass them along to more \"traditional\" restaurants.

In all of my travels, none beats Bubble Tea & Me in First Markham Place. I discovered this fantaslamismic joint only last month, and have been back at least four or five times. recently i switched over to moto v635 after a lot of research. it\'s GSM (quad band) world phone, with:
+ 1.23mpix camera (nice but not essential - takes good pix during the day, leaves a lot to be desired at night)
+ internal MP3 player - found it useless (slow and cumbersome, so i bought an iriver.. lol)
+ crazy tiny memory called transflash (v635i will come with 512 mine came with 32) enough for 100pix or so
LESS than half the size of an SD card

+ bluetooth enabled

Great little cellphone. Here are the pros and cons:
+ 2.0 megapixel camera with autofocus + flash + panoramic pictures + video
+ MP3 player with headphones
+ Memory Stick duo
+ BlueTooth
+ Speakerphone
+ Small and lightweight
+ Long battery life for what it does
- Plastic shell
- Display could be larger
- GSM means only with crappy Rogers
- Speaker could be louder
- SonyEricsson\'s slow UI

I was looking to get the Samsung D500 as well, but after taking a good look at it, I chose otherwise. I didn\'t like it\'s small screen and the non-expandable memory capacity. I then started to look at the Sony phones, specifically the 637, but after reading a few reviews of I narrowed my search to either Nokia or Motorola. I recently played around with my cousin\'s Sony 700i, nice phone, but certain aspects of it\'s UI seemed slow, especially if retrieving text messages. At first I wanted to get the Motorola e398 but after seeing the larger, nicer screen on the e1000, I chose that one. It wasn\'t only after paying did I notice the Motorola a1000 smartphone with an even larger TOUCHSCREEN and PDA functions. Too bad it was going for $300 more than the one I just bought.

what ever happened to cellphones that JUST make phone calls.. lol
seriously.. digicams are always sub par, the UI is slow, file transfer is attrocious at best (except lately via btooth) MP3 playback - why would you want something so cumbersome? and on top of all that they don\'t even cook meals yet - what gives?
i guess they look cool :D and have pwetty colours :) and oh yah.. did i mention they are ridiculously expensive.. check out the price tag on this baby:

I hear cellphones for 10 yr olds are becoming quite common.

Anyone know a Canadian distributor for these things?
Lookey here. (http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/news/article/phobile_07150541/)
I\'d be interested in one of those too. I cancelled my landline a while back so I\'m using my cellphone exclusively - a large handset like that would be nice to use at home.

I pretty much just use my cell phone as a.... phone! Yeah it\'s too bad that it just has 90mb onboard mem but I don\'t use it anyways. Occasionally snap a pic or a vid but that\'s about it. The great thing about it is the size and that you can still talk without sliding it up. It pretty much has all the features I want:
small size
speaker phone
camera (1.3 megapix isn\'t that bad)
bluetooth (still need to get a headset)
mp3 ringtones!! I love this
There are definitely some better phones out there. soopa yours looks like the shiet!!! damn! Kind of an impulse buy for me... when I saw it slide i was sold.

ya know this kinda pisses me off... no offence... ironically this had to do with a reply to you Whodilly... HAHA...
This SUCKS... Ya know in 1998 .... in first year at school... I redesigned a phone.... looking EXACTLY like that.... the Slider I called it. Perhaps a little more egernomical for the hand ... but pretty much the exact same. Anyway... I got like a 65% on that project, advising me it was a horrible design... and who would want a slide phone. Piss me right off... DAMMIT!!!

Majic: 2 megapixel digicam\'s not bad with autofocus... and data cable included uses USB2.0...
Zaku: Jay Chow rocks!!
On 3G: Toronto will never be as advanced in cellular connection than Asian countries for the following reasons:
1. Rogers essentially has monopoly over GSM; no competition to drive up the specs
2. TTC wants $200,000 per station for subway cellular access last time I checked
3. No one\'s willing to spend on infrastructure
On HOFO Meets: Wow... I guess instead of comparing exhausts, they can compare ringtones... lol

i guess 2mpix might be nice.. (my 1.23 mpix is surprisingly good in bright conditions, not as good in dim lighting) i was talking about more of the mainstream < 1mpix.. no matter how many mpix, it\'ll never be as good as a stand alone digicam.
and yah.. usb 2.0.. i have that too, maybe it\'s just my phone but it\'s really slow (1.0 spec or worse) - maybe it\'s the TF card on-phone-reader? oh well, i use my separate USB Key and my MP3 player for files/music anyway

I really have no numbers to back this up, but I believe a greater percentage of Asians wear glasses. I certainly do, as do my entire family. Not sure whether it\'s genetic or as a result of diet (or maybe both)...
I hear kids who have diets rich in fatty acids (eg. fats from fish and seafood) are less likely to require glasses...
I may be stereotying, I know, but at least this is the thread to do it in!
Do you wear glasses?
I think you mean to ask if we, the asians here, wear corrective lenses? Contact lenses or glasses here, depending on my mood.

no corrective lens, over 1/2 my friends do not wear corrective lens.
Maybe as I age that\'ll change.

Of all the hundreds of thousands of asian people I\'ve met in my life, I can only remember one person who never needed glasses. He\'s 31 and still has 20/20 vision. I don\'t think I\'ll likely ever meet another asian person over 20 who doesn\'t need glasses (except with the assistance of laser surgery)
I wear glasses, never needed contacts as I\'m only 1.25/1.25, don\'t need them all the time.

Hey, a friend (and her family - her mother is still there too) of mine is Chinese but was (I believe) born and raised in the Philippines.
Good Lord, I tried fish balls for the first time this past summer because my cousin had a craving for them. I took her all the way to Sheppard and Markham because that was the only place I knew where to get them. I did not enjoy them at all. I was intrigued because I saw them all over the place in Manila but I was leary to try anything sold streetside.

No it\'s not... Most of the younger generation from Taipei may not be able to speak Taiwanese, but not from the rest of Taiwan.

Interesting. I\'ve been to Taiwan once but that was many years ago - don\'t remember too much from the trip apart from the fact that the food was great! I\'d love to go again someday.

OMG that\'s my favorite Taiwanese dish!! To be honest with you, there\'s not a single place serving good \"oh ah me schwa\" in TO... But if you must have it, you might want to try this place: Old Lee\'s Beef Noodle, just past Midland on Sheppard... I wouldn\'t say that it\'s the best there, but at least it\'s a start... lol
EDIT: Btw the name of the restaurant is the direct translation from Chinese... I doubt that\'s the English name... lol\'
Get me the name, bro! I can\'t read Chinese (except for my own name and the numbers 1 to 10)!

lol... *sigh* I\'ll swing by that restaurant the next time I\'m in that area...
On Sat I asked my Taiwanese friends for a good place for the oyster noodle thing, and Metro Square came up. Go to the food court of Metro Square (near Warden on Steeles), and go to the booth closest to the parking lot window. That place is owned by Taiwanese and has a lot of great Taiwanese dimsum.

Wrong thread. This is a G-rated thread. Not a G-string-rated thread.

Remind me what Smelly Tofu is.
Isn\'t that the stuff that comes in small little cubes that comes in a jar, stinks, and you eat it with Congee?

the jar thing, we call it \"fu yu\", or Preserved bean curb. don\'t ask me how to make them, I only know it is more complicated to make than smelly tofu.:p

um....Smelly Tofu is actually a deep-fried Tofu w/smelly! That\'s what it distincted from the regular deep-fried Tofu, and we eat it HOT, but the jar thing we eat them at cold and stored them in the fridge!:p

Whatever smelly tofu is made of, I am 100% certain that smelly socks is one of the ingredients. People say it\'s sooooo good, but how can something so smelly be sooooo good.

I definitely remembered NOT ever having anything remotely like smelly Tofu.
You guys that have had it. Suckers! lol.
Seriously, where can I find some. Better have 100% authentic smelly socks in them. :D

LOL, I know those mock Korean BBQ (courtesy of Chiense) are in no way of similar to the authentic Korean cuisine. We ate in them doesn\'t mean we wanna have some authentic Korean food, but it\'s just simply a casual place for dinner, but seriously I want some authentic Korean food sometimes as well, any suggestion?:)

Try Soeul House just past Yorkdale at Dufferin and Orfis Road. Can\'t get any more authentic than this place. The Bulgogi and Kalbi are their specialty.

I went to a Korean BBQ place on Sheppard right at Nugget (west of Markham Rd). It was the first time I ever went to one (I don\'t get around much) and I must say that it wasn\'t bad. At the time it was all you can eat (chicken, seafood and meat...soft drinks included) for only $18. The only thing I noticed odd was that they didn\'t seem to have one of those City of Toronto Department of Health Inspections signs posted in their window. :(
