View Full Version : Home Subwoofer for the Car?

I have a subwoofer (actually 2 the same) that I bought from Studio Lab, about 10-years ago, I just don’t use them anymore, and had them packed away for about 7-years now. The intent is to use as passive (in series) with bookshelf speakers, where the low frequencies go to the base, and the highs pass though to the regular speakers.
I was wondering if this would work in a car, perhaps just changing the crossover circuit? The measurements are about 15.75x15.5x8.5 inches, and contain two 6-½ inch speakers. I don’t know the wattage, but they are 8-ohm speakers.
I wouldn’t mind selling these units, for car or home use, and if these will work in the car, I will post again under the buy and sell. I paid $200 each, and would take $50 each, or best offer.
Thanks a lot.

They should work... The only problem is the ohm rating. Only thing you can do about that is hook both of them up together in parallel which will result in 4ohm load. One more thinkg to consider is that car subs are designed to take into account the lack of space, so the speakers are \"ususally\" tuned for smaller enclosures, wheras home audio is not.
Do you have the specs of the speaker? (vas/qt/ etc..) with those measurments you can determine the optimal sealed/ported enclosure. If the proper box is not designed, then they will sound like poop.
Check THIS (http://www.ajdesigner.com/speaker/index.php) link out. They have software on there that will tell you the optimal enclosure size, once all the parameters have been entered.
There was a better program that I had (with graphs and all), but i can\'t seem to find it. When and if i do, I\'ll update my post

I wouldn\'t even bother with all of that, a true car audio sub and box can be purchased for as little as $150, and a good quality set-up for not much more. I would sell the StudioLabs if money is tight and get some proper gear.

I agree with PSIVIC\'S statement and just want to add that those are house speakers which are not designed to withstand the extremes of being in a vehicle, they would tear apart in no time.

Thanks for the replies. I don’t have any specs; perhaps I lost it, or didn’t get it, I just can’t remember. I’m not hard up for money, like my wife, they are just taking up space, and contributing nothing to society.;)
I will sell them off, and whatever other junk I don’t use anymore.
Thanks again.
