Best Dealership for Trade-in
The hunt has begun to replace my '05 GT, but i'm wondering if I should trade it in or try and sell it private. I'm leaning towards a trade-in to avoid the headaches of selling private.
Has anyone shopped around different mazda dealerships to see if the trade value will be more? if so, what dealership valued your old ride the most?
did anyone get a higher offer at another manufacturer than they did at mazda?
Re: Best Dealership for Trade-in
it really depends, ill give you my experience.
November 2010 i went to a mistubishi dealer in montreal and was offered 13,289 as a trade in, but they were not budging on the car (2011 lancer ralliart 4 door)
july 2011 i went to 2 mazda dealers, both offered 12,000$ but had a lot more room to negotiate.
So some dealers can pull that trick on you where they offer you more for the trade in, but give you less discount on the car your buying.

the only way to truly know is to first get the best price on the new car (i.e., closest to invoice), then ask them to appraise your trade in. otherwise they could just give you a higher trade in value to make you feel good while not giving you as good of deal on the new car itself.
based on this method i got the highest trade in and ultimately best deal at ontario mazda and the worst at qew (before they moved). trade in values at erin mills and direct mazda fell in between them.
i didnt go to jeff, so i cant comment on what kind of trade in value i would have got at MOT, but i would recommend going there first based on price and feedback.

You can also try and get them to buy the car from you. I had the dealership buy my old truck and write me a check for the value. I used the corporate rebates and discounts as down payment and pocketed the full value of my old truck.

It depends ....
Any dealership taking your trade-in will want it below market value in order for them to try and retail it or taking into account the margin they have on the car your looking to buy.
There is a small tax break on your trade-in because it's used against the price of the vehicle you are buying. ie: New vehicle - Your trade in x HST
Some people just don't want to bother trying to sell their vehicle privately .... However, you will probably get better value for your trade-in selling it privately.
