What oil filter are you using thread? - Speed3/6
Thought I'd create a thread to see what oil filter people were using for their speeds. Lots of people are running rotella t6. Is a special oil filter needed?
Plz Don't yell at me I'm just overly cautious
I did read the ms3 oil section but it has been a while and I just want to make sure preferences hadn't changed.

Re: What oil filter are you using thread
If you've searched the TM3 threads, should probably go on MSF to find more.
But, here's a few...
K&N
NAPA gold
Wix
EDIT: Sorry, not sure what the part numbers are. K&N is HP-1002 though.

Running NAPA gold per forum research :)

I use the OEM one as well. As for the Fram ones they are no longer manufactured here in Canada is IIRC as they were one of our customers for the company I work for.

Whatever Jimmy provides at SF.
But if I order something through dealer anyway, I will get OEM from there.

I'm using OEM for my spin-on too. Would switching to NAPA gold or Bosch make any difference?

I have tried all of the cartridge filters over the years (basically whatever I could get on sale)... Wix, K&N, Fram, OEM, mobil-1 etc. They were all essentially the same construction and quality. People who say to stay away from the cheap Fram filters are just propagating internet rumors.... they're fine. Maybe a long time ago they had issues and that started the rumor. I did notice that the K&N ones got twisted a bit on installation, but that could have been a fluke.
About to try the high end Fram Ultras that I got for free at CT, they are noticeably better construction/materials, really good quality.

For my Speed I use spin-on filter 51516 by Wix. It's about twice as tall as the normal spin-on for our 2.3L engines.

I use oem too. They work just fine in my opinion.

Scary that speed3 owners use the oem filters. For the 2nd gen they are the same as the regular 3

Re: What oil filter are you using thread? - Speed3/6
So you run stock because of warranty........ but upgrade your oil filter?????? ..........maybe I'm missing something obvious :)

Same across the gen1 ms3 and mz3 too. But I don't see why that is scary... Unless you're an automotive engineer and know more about Mazda's lubrication system than they do.

Just because it's satisfactory, doesn't mean it's great, or even good. Mazda engineers also feel the RMM is satisfactory, and yet everyone swaps them out cause they really aren't.
Ever go for an alignment? Those engineers sure did make a wide range of acceptable specs. Or how about running normal oil vs synthetic? Anyone who has done lab analysis of their oil knows PP or T6 is all you should run, but I don't see that in the Mazda manual.
Bottom line is that just because it's acceptable to Mazda, doesn't mean you can't get far better elsewhere.

Rotella T6 is for diesels. Do not run it in the speed
its heavy duty diesel oil, says right on the bottle. I made that mistake once

you're comparing NVH levels to engine health/longevity...not the same. Also, just because some people say oil A is better than oil B on the internet doesn't make it a fact. Mazda gives you the basic requirements to keep your car running well and you're free to change them if you want
