Recommended Paint for Rims

Hey guys,

I'm gonna paint my rx-8 rims High-gloss black for the summer, I'm looking for tips or recommendations on which paint to use (brand, I'v heard there are more expensive ones that are better) as well as which clear coat to use.

As of now I dont have a compressor or paint gun, not sure if I can rent one anywhere in montreal though... if I did, whats the procedure for that? pouring the paint into the gun and going? or is there some diluting that needs to be done.

Don't know what your budget is but if you can swing a few hundred bucks powder coating would be the way to go. Check out Quay in the sponsors section.

My budget is big, but powder coating around here costs around 350 at the cheapest place, id like to stay under that if I can

Get your rims painted by body shop with the tires of its cheaper

350 is not including tire mounting... painting isn't much cheaper... at least not in Montreal...

In any case, I want to do it myself, I just want some paint recommendations..

Go with solvent base paint Better coverage but if you use water borne paint in your garage in the winter it won't dry and you have to finish your rims in 600 grit sandpaper to have the paint covering the sand scratches there's a lot of paint companies best ones I've seen or even used are example Dupont, akzo Nobel, pro2spray

By finishing the rims in 600 grit sandpaper, you mean the highest grit sandpaper before priming would be 600? or sand the primer with 600? or...

If the rim is in good condition just sand with 400 then finish it off with 600 grit, but if there's some gouges and stuff fix it then sand the whole rims with 320 then prime let it sit for a day or two then sand the rim with 400 then finish it off with 600 and its ready to paint

So what your telling me is if the rims are in good condition (which they are) sand 400,600, then prime then sand again with 400,600, then paint, wait then clear? Should I wetsand and buff the clear? or is that not necessary

if the rim is in good condition as you said just sand it with 400 then finish it off with 600 then clean the rim and shoot paint on it and clear it and if your really picky let the rim dry for a couple of days and water sand it carefully and buff it

definitely, definitely prime. with paint you always want to prime, if at all possible. It promotes adhesion and will hold better than onto bare metal.
as others have said, if you want them to stand the test of time, go for a powdercoat. My rims are "painted", but that's with a Mil-Spec CARC coating thats designed to withstand the harsh solvents used in post deployment vehicle decontamination....most commercially available paints wont hold up well on rims

My rims are already painted matte black at this point, they held up alright, at least enough for me not to see the very small nics... The reason im asking is because I know high gloss finish is a bit different then matte, in any case, what are good paints? do you second any of the brands that Manpreet mentioned?

I got my RX 8 rims painted glossy black at a wheel specialist up here in Ottawa. If you got time DIY otherwise take it to shop

That being said. What do you recommend. Iv heard about wurth or DuPont. But where can I get it. And what product in the product line should I get?
