'06 Mazda 3 making weird clicking noise when accelerating?

So my Mazda has been making this weird clicking noise when I accelerate. When I am coasting the sound seizes. The harder I press the gas the louder and faster the noise gets.
I've taken it to my mechanic, he told me to try a higher octane gas, which I had already tried and he put some oil treatment in the oil. I just dont think he knows what the problem is. The noise does not happen when I am idling and press the gas. The car also shakes very hard when stopped at stop lights. I'm pretty sure its misfiring, I just had my motor mounts replaced(for the 2nd time UGHHH!!) so idk what to do. The issue is the noise though. if i had to compare it to another noise i would say its most like a playing card in bike spokes, or maybe the sound of a series of sparks. Hard to explain!
Maybe the lifters? or the timing chain? Im not car savy.

Is this engine 2.3L or 2.0L ? If it's misfiring should set a engine light on also.

The check engine light is on, I'm not sure what the code is though.

Hey, when you are at idle does your steering wheel have a shake or vibration feel ? That's one indication of misfiring engine.
The best thing to do is scan the code and go from there. Depending on the code. The problem could be igniton coil or spark plugs or both. Possible that you are not getting spark ( electrical issue). I mean if you are having misfires than you are having incomplete combustion in your engine which could create that clicking noise.

It's a 2.0 and yea check engine light is on .

get the code scanned. there's a bunch of members with code scanners, or you can try part source (i think they still do this for free)

Well I got the full details for everyone. My car currently has approx 82k miles on it
I bought it used 2 years ago with 40k miles. Around 60k my transmission goes out along with the motor mounts. I had purchased an extended warranty so that was covered.
around 65k my radiator goes out, still covered.
82k motor mounts broken again(known problems with mazdas)
AND GET READY!!! 82k Cylinder 4 is not firing, has water in it. Engine: GONE! Now needs engine replaced.
