Default Stock clutch gone, help me with options

    Hey guys

I'm fully bolted, and my stock clutch gave out. I was going to get an ACT XZ5-HDSS but I read some pretty harsh reviews on what seemed like a promising clutch package. I know some people are gonna say get a spec stage 2 with fIdanza flywheel, but are there other options? Or has anyone had an ACT and care to share a review? Would love to get this thing fixed asap as I cannot even hit boost right now, very disappointing..

    Thanks!

im running spec stage 3 6puck with refinished oem flywheel. never had any problems, easy engagement and good bite. again, this is for an mz3, not sure how well that translates over to the ms3 spec clutchs.

I trust that spec is a good company, kinda looking for options for the ms3 obviously, gonna be stage two as I don't plan on having more than 400 torque, already have around 360 so it's gonna be expensive . Just want to know what people think about ACT or other possible options that isn't 3000 for just parts lol

MS3 has dual mass flywheel, unable to refinish. Hella pricey to replace. My buddy had to replace his on his speed 6, close to 2500$
I have had a replacement exedy kit on my 05, worked really well. My buddy with his WRX installed a stage 2 exedy kit. Still holding strong about 45k in

Do you make exedy for ms3? Keeping in mind I have 360 torque?

Stock OEM clutch is amazing... it lasts a long time and if have a stock motor + turbo it's great. If you plan to go for more power down the road go with one of the suggested above.

    Options:
South bend + ACT + (OEM + Fidanza) + CP-e (Clutch master... lol).

    My Opinion:
I plan to replace my OEM with an OEM, it's lasted me 60,000 kms @ 350 tq in stupid GTA traffic so far hopefully it lasts another. That would be my decision since I have stock motor and turbo (just tuned and bolted).

If you daily the car in traffic I would avoid anything that is a 6 puck as it will likely wear quickly. Full faced clutches are best for getting good wear in daily use but I haven't heard good things about the ACT full faced clutches.

If you plan on going big with the turbo and motor you should upgrade the clutch to something other than OEM or if you plan on tracking it a lot.

As pwdunmore said, I would go OEM too. Mine has lasted me 125k and counting including learning drive stick on it and 2 owners during the first 50k.
That being said, I'm curious to see what you end up going with, where you get it and final cost. Subbed.

one thing you have to consider with the MS3 clutch is that you have to do something with the flywheel...the stock flywheel is a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMFW) and the springs wear out over time, as your torque increases from modding, etc.

if you're going OEM clutch, you will have to either:
    * resurface the OEM DMFW ... most machine shops won't resurface a DMFW
    * buy a new DMFW at about $1000-1700 depending on where you get it from

if you're going aftermarket clutch, this makes it easier as you don't necessarily have to use the OE DMFW:
    * some kits come with a Single Mass Flywheel (i.e. Southbend, ACT)
    * and SPEC offers a choice of both... 1) use OE DMFW with one of their Self-Ratcheting (SR) clutches, or use a SPEC replacement flywheel (SZ03A) for their SR clutches; and 2) a non-SR clutch that must be used with the SPEC billet flywheel SZ03A-2

How bad is the chatter with a SMFW?

Does a SMFW effect driveability at all?

    No.

Depends. The clutch disk is still sprung and if you go with a steel flywheel in the 20+ lbs range (rather than aluminum) it shouldn't be too bad.

You may have to rev it more due to it being lighter but I have heard a lot of good things about them and very few complaints.
The "chatter" with the clutch out will be noticeable but it isn't that bad. If you have driven in someone's car with a Transmission mount you will know what I am talking about.

It is a faint ticking of the gears tapping each other as they rotate. The dual mass flywheel dampens this noise so you do not hear it as much but with a single mass you will hear it more. It is not a deal breaker in my opinion.

How much faster to the revs drop with a SMFW vs DMFW? The MS3 doesn't seem to suffer from the rev hang as bad as the GF's Fiesta ST. It is actually difficult to time up shifts smoothly because the revs hang for so long.

No idea as I have no experienced it for myself, maybe someone who has can chime in. I wouldn't think it would be a lot since you don't hear people complaining about it.

It would definitely slow down faster than stock, but that is because the dual mass weighs so damn much.

Honestly, the only place I've read bad things about the ACT full face clutch kit is street unit. And I don't trust anything from that site. I think I'm going to try the ACT XZ5-HDSS with the streetlite 22lb flywheel. I'll let you guys know what I think about it when it's installed, I'm not about to spend 3 gs for OE + labour
