My experience purchasing after i decided i wanted an 09 Mazda3 GS sedan with moonroof:
I went into Erin Mills Mazda in early april and was told by a sales associate that they couldn't get the car I was looking for. I called surrounding dealers in Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Brantford, Orangeville and was told it is a very hard car to find with the 2010's being in as of January. There was a demo in burlington but they weren't budging much on the price. A friend of mine told me to try his Mazda salesman, he has bought his car and referred 5 other people to him. I called the salesperson and he said he could get the car from another dealer, probably from quebec, but they didn't have them on the lot. When he asked me to come in and see him, I found out he was also at Erin Mills Mazda. I figured the first salesperson was trying to sell me a car they had on the lot (he was pushing the 09 GS no moonroof).
I used carcostcanada to get dealer invoice, then:
April 23rd - Signed deal for 09 GS sedan w moonroof at which point they gave me a very good price i thought, 3 - 4% above invoice including the april $750 rebate, and 0% financing. I told them I didn't care about colour, I just didn't want a red car. They drew up a purchase agreement and put silver black or grey in the colour. I asked them why they couldn't tell me what colour the car was. The sales Manager said, and i quote, "I guarantee I can get one of these cars, I just won't be able to find out til the morning". So I signed the deal, and the next day (Friday) I didn't get a call. I figured I'd wait the weekend. I called Tuesday, didn't get a call back.
April 29th - went in on Wednesday and the Finance Manager walked over and said he'd left me a couple of messages (on completely the wrong phone number) that they needed a copy of my sin card. I told him I'd scan and send him in the morning. which I did, on April 30th.
May 2nd - Saturday I left a message for the salesman who called me back and asked if I wanted silver or grey. I said grey, and he said my financing paperwork should be done Monday (May 4th)
May 4th I left a message for the finance manager, didn't get a call back. May 5th I went into the dealer, the finance manager saw me and said 'i just got your financing done.' The sales Manager said he was just leaving a message to find out which one was going to be released to him, the grey or silver. I asked them to email me the VIN number. No call back/email.
May 7th I went back to the dealer and the Sales Manager says "bad news, I couldn't get the car. There is only the copper red available, but I didn't check that because you said you didn't want red".
May 8th they confirmed no red, not possible to get the car I purchased. I could take another 09 if i wanted to, he'd even give me the GT at dealer invoice.
I called Mazda Canada and asked them why I couldn't get their 0% deal at another dealer since I signed for the car and there was one available at another dealer. They were no help.
Unfortunately, I only found TorontoMazda3.ca the day I signed the deal, after I signed the deal.
I contacted Jeff at MOT again May 8th and he said he had one Black 09 GS w a moonroof left, and someone was coming at 4pm to look at it. Jeff's customer bought a 2010, and I asked him May 9th for a price. Unfortunately he wouldn't give me a discount on a popular car with the last one left, other then the manufacturers large rebate.
I put a deposit on the phone and have claimed what would appear to be the last 09 GS w moonroof in Ontario. (I also talked to a car broker who told me his Mazda dealer had sold their last one 6 days prior, and they had over 30 calls w dealers looking for that car.)
So Erin Mills screwed me out of the April Promotion. If I were to take the current 5+% financing, it would cost me over $2K more over the 48 months. I'm finding my own financing. With the bigger rebate in May, Its probably going to end up costing me between 500 and 1000 extra over the 4 years, but lesson learned I guess, and hopefully this post helps someone else not make the same mistake I did.
Several people have told me that Erin Mills sold me a nonexistant car to keep me out of the market. The story I got from them was that there were cars that were available and they weren't available by the time my financing went through.
Moral of the story; you don't sign agreements without a VIN number. Live and learn, I guess.
and buyer beware if you go to erin mills mazda. If you're on this forum you'll probably go to MOT or Oakville Mazda anyway, but just felt the need to put in my $0.02.
Anyway, looking forward to being part of this forum, and getting advice on mods and service...
plans: tints, sharkfin, probably molding removal and maybe caliper painting in the near future. perhaps door sill leds, and blacked out badges at some point. I'd love to debadge the car if it weren't for the holes to cover, but c'est la vie.
Being able to buy a new car should be a happy experience, and hopefully it will be that once i pick up the car in two weeks...
