Question GI: sound deadening & other topics

Hey guys, as some of you know I made it out for a week to Las Vegas in November to attend SEMA. Being a car guy at SEMA is like being a child at a candy store. Needless to say I had a blast.

I got the chance to see the latest and yet released automotive products & cars, I had the pleasure of meet some very prominent people in the industry, some with celebrity status (Chip Foose at a private function & chatted up with Peter Klutt, owner of Legendary Motor Cars & host of Dream Car Garage on the flight back home to Toronto). I came home with a suitcase full of information, new ideas for Mazda / Mazda3 products and countless business cards of prominent leaders & companies from around the world.

So what does this have to do with you?

Well, here is what I figured. I had the chance to rub elbows (and drink beer on occasion) with these guys and figured that you guys might like the chance to do the same?

Since I can't afford to fly you all out to Las Vegas, what I can do is get these men and women to share their time and expertise to educate you and answer any of your questions as it relates to their expertise.

I have been producing molded Mazda3 carpet kits for almost a year now and have spoken to hundreds of Mazda3 owners either on forums, email or on the phone. Outside of the crappy carpet that came in our cars, the one thing I kept hearing from TorontoMazda3.ca members and other Mazda3 owners is that they wanted their cars to be quieter inside.

While my carpet kits do reduce the amount of noise in our 3's, it doesn't exactly make it as quiet as a Lexus. And with so many different products on the market and each with its own specific application it can be confusing.

So what I have done is spoken to Tim, who I met at SEMA who has been in the acoustical insulation business for over 20 years, wrote a book that is considered the bible of car audio and is leading expert in acoustical insulation in both home theatre and car audio and asked him if he would be open to conducting either a webinar or teleseminar on how to make your car quieter and answering any questions you would have.

So there are 2 things that I would like to know from all of you.

    1) Who would be interested in me getting this call organized?

    2) What other subjects would you like to have organized on such a format?

    Let me know guys....

I for one would certainly be interested in this. I've tinker with the sound isolation aspect with sound deadening material with moderate success (imo) and would definitely benefit from the gurus in the industry.

Now, my aim is to isolate as much noise from the outside environment as possible with the least additional weight as I can. Current sound deadening material like B-quiet and the likes doesn't quite fit that ideology.

Baymoe - I'm in the same boat as you ... with my previous car I went balls-out with sound dampening all over the car's interior, and I mean ALL-OVER ... from the roof all the way down and the sides and all over the floor, covering every single inch of metal panels, sometimes putting 2 layers, and it took me a solid 72hrs to lay the Sound Dampener down.
    I used Cascade Audio's V-Max for this

Drove the car for a week to see what effects it had, and then started laying down Sound Barrier (Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier) pad over the sound dampener, covered as much of the sides and floor of the car as I could.
    I used Cascade Audio's VB-4 for this.

I can tell you that if you're trying to block out "outside noise" from getting into the car, you want to concentrate on Sound Barrier. Due to the thickness and material used to manufacture, it makes it quite hard for the sound waves to penatrate through. There's more to it, but I won't go into detail.

If you want to read up on how to achieve this while saving weight, you might want to check this out.

More importantly the CLD Tiles, Vinyl/Nitrite Closed Cell Foam, and Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier pages ... I plan to do this combo for my Mazda3 this summer, and hope to keep the added weight down as much as possible.

Anyways - I TOO would be seriously interested in talking to the industry leaders about this stuff and learn as much as possible.

Oh, my previous car was quite as a Lexus when all was said and done, but it was much heavier cause of the amount of sound dampening and barrier used.

I'm interested in sound deadening to keep the outside noise(exhaust) from inside.
Light material and great decibel improvement and reasonable price will be the key point!!

So am I. I had a great conversation with one guy from Cascade Audio at SEMA. I always found all the different sound deadening materials to be confusing and this guy was pretty good at explaining it all.

The carpet kit, made the car quieter, but I would like to get it more so. Almost Lexus quiet.

Who was it that you met at Cascade? Was it Paul?

Love Cascade's products, it does exactly what they claim it'll do, and their products are way better than Dynamat's products ...

I met with Doug Moir, Product Manager. I believe that he is the owner of Cascade.
