Default Stock MP3 player - question

Future owner of a mazda 3 gs, total newbie here.

Quick questions RE the stock radio/mp3 unit that comes with the M3:

    - does it support the ogg vorbis format? (yup, linux/OSS geek here)
    - can it play tracks (mp3 or hopefully ogg) out of a DVD-ROM, or only CD-ROMs (700MB) are supported?
    - can you browse your mp3/ogg collection by genre?

Bonus question: does anyone know if the fancy pioneer or kenwood double-din touchscreen units supports vorbis?

What year? Only the 8.5+ cars had the option of MP3 compatible player. And then only MP3s on CD

pretty much all mainstream products do NOT support oggs... it's not a mainstream "popular" format nor do companies care for "hacks"
one should not have such high expectations for such things.... think about how many years it took to have MP3 support in mainstream CD players (aftermarket or stock), and divx support in DVD players.... should you expect matrovska to be in DVD players? NO

    I see

Well I didn't have high hopes anyways

BTW - this is for a new 2010 GS - coming soon. My digital music collection - the one for my portable audio player - is in ogg format, looks like I will have to re-cut some of it into mp3s. Or find a more geeky carputer-type alternative that can handle oggs (and also include NAV )

how about playing the files from your portable music player to the car audio using an adapter. Plug the adapter to the audio input (in the center console box). In that case you are just using the speakers and navigate the tracks using the audio controls.
Not a perfect solution, but a work around

the 04-05 had a dealer installed OEM MP3 CD option....but it was $600.

luckily i got mine from a guy that sold OEM RX-8 parts straight from japan (the units were the same for the 3 and RX-8) for half that back in 04.

Wow - great tip. I also have a 9700 and I didn't know it could play back ogg/flac - this could be the right solution, will test it out. Actually I was about to ask about using the 9700 for navigation, I will start a different thread for that; if that works out, here's my "poor man's carputer"
